The Bard of the Future: Integrating the elderly and persons with special needs by means of Digital Story Telling

Abstract

This paper presents a project relating to a Digital Storytelling (DST) Lab involving a group of elderly people coming from a retirement home and a secondary school class of 12 to 13 students in size, with several of them having significant special educational needs. Heterogeneously grouped, students and elderly were trained to use DST as a cooperative learning digital environment platform aimed at social inclusion and acquisition of citizenship key competencies.

The paper was presented at the International Digital Story Telling Conference in Athens in May 2014.

Thanks to an environment allowing them to experience problem solving, creativity, discussion, analysis and interpretation, students were able to appreciate the importance of experienced knowledge, to develop social skills and to assume both individual and group responsibilities. On the other side, the elderly developed their formative potential and fostered the build-up of inter-generational dialogue and knowledge.
