Artificial Intelligence AI

Artificial Intelligence

Since 2016, MIICT has been a key participant in the advancement and application of Artificial Intelligence (AI). We recognised early on that AI would not just be another technological evolution, but a fundamental shift in how organisations operate, innovate, and create value, a key to either great prosperity or great destitution. Our engagement in this field is driven by a commitment to harnessing this transformative power for our project partners and the wider community. Through our dedicated internal team and an extensive network of specialised members, we undertake comprehensive guidance and development works that span the entire AI ecosystem, from foundational research to deployment and regulatory compliance.

Our approach is rooted in a deep understanding of both the theoretical underpinnings and the practical applications of AI. We believe that successful AI implementation is not just about algorithms, but about obtaining, cleaning and curating data conducive to the creation of intelligent, unbiased systems that are robust, reliable, and aligned with strategic social, political and economic goals.

Pioneering Advanced Learning Systems

At the core of our AI expertise are Deep Learning (DL) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). These advanced subsets of Machine Learning (ML) are the engines behind many of modern AI’s most significant breakthroughs. We architect sophisticated DL models that can uncover intricate patterns and insights from vast and complex datasets, going far beyond the capabilities of traditional analytics. Our work with CNNs, in particular, has led to powerful solutions in the realm of Computer Vision applied to live camera feeds and satellite image sets. We develop systems that grant machines the ability to see and interpret the world around them, enabling applications such as automated quality control in agrifood systems to make our food safer, advanced medical imaging analysis to be able to detect and intervene earlier where medical interventions are required, and intelligent surveillance systems that can identify objects and events in real-time to make physical spaces safer for everyone.

Bridging the Human-Machine Communication Gap

The ability for machines to understand and interact with us in our own language is a cornerstone of modern AI. Our work in Speech Recognition and Synthesis focuses on creating seamless and natural auditory interactions. We build robust systems capable of accurately transcribing spoken language into text and synthesising lifelike human speech from text. This technology powers everything from sophisticated voice-controlled user interfaces to automated customer service agents and accessibility tools for challenged individuals with special needs who can use technology to overcome their challenges.

Similarly, our expertise in Natural Language Processing (NLP) allows us to build applications that can parse, interpret, and generate human language in its written form as though it understood it (it actually does not but is very good at picking up patterns and predicting what should come next). This enables the development of intelligent chatbots for customer care, sentiment analysis tools to gauge public opinion from social media, and systems that can automatically summarise long documents, saving valuable time and resources.

Delivering Intelligent Decision-Making at Scale

Many organisations possess a wealth of institutional knowledge held by key human experts. We also have expertise in codifying this knowledge into Expert Systems, which may be thought of as intelligent platforms that emulate the decision-making abilities of a human specialist. These systems provide consistent, scalable, and reliable advice for complex problems, ensuring that expert-level knowledge is available across the organisation at any time.

To enhance user engagement and drive personalisation, we also design and implement sophisticated Recommender Systems, and analyse existing ones to make recommendations on how to align such systems better with human intent and well-being objectives. By analysing patterns in user behaviour, preferences, and historical data, these systems deliver highly-relevant and personalised content, product, or service suggestions. This not only improves the user experience but also creates significant value by increasing sales, engagement, and customer loyalty.

Ensuring Trustworthy and Compliant AI

As AI systems become more integrated into critical government, NGO and business processes, their ability to be understood and trusted is paramount. This is why we place a strong emphasis on elusive AI Explainability. Our commitment is to try move beyond “black box” models by developing AI systems whose decision-making processes are more transparent and interpretable to human operators, something which we have been working on using clustering techniques and statistical causality inferencing. While we are still some way from solving the problem in its totality, this is crucial for debugging, auditing, and building user confidence, especially in highly-regulated industries.

Furthermore, the rapid evolution of AI has brought with it a complex and growing web of legal, ethical and compliance considerations. MIICT provides essential guidance on AI and ancillary regulations, and also interacts with policy-makers with a view to provide feedback on making AI regulation better. We help project partners navigate the intricate landscape of data privacy, algorithmic fairness, and accountability, ensuring that their AI solutions are not only powerful but also responsible, ethical, and fully compliant with current and forthcoming legal frameworks.

If your organisation is ready to explore the transformative potential of AI, we invite you to connect with us. Let MIICT be your trusted partner in turning complex AI capabilities into tangible project success.
