Earth Observation and Downstream Space
The view from space offers one of the most powerful perspectives for understanding and managing our world. At MIICT, we operate in the downstream sector of the space industry, transforming selected streams of satellite data into actionable intelligence. Our focus is on harnessing Earth Observation (EO) data to solve complex terrestrial problems, enhance decision-making, and create new value for areas with a social-impact potential ranging from agriculture and environmental monitoring to urban planning and maritime security. We combine advanced data science with deep domain expertise to translate pixels from orbit into practical insights on the ground.
Our work is grounded in a multi-layered approach to geospatial data, ensuring that those using our datasets and analysis receive the most comprehensive and reliable intelligence possible.
Visualising a World of Data with GIS
At the core of our EO expertise are advanced Geographical Information Systems (GIS). These applications serve as our digital canvas, allowing us to map, model, analyse, and visualise complex geospatial information. We work with ArcGIS, QGIS, GeoServer and Maptitude, and go beyond simple mapping, using GIS to integrate diverse datasets and reveal spatial patterns and relationships that would otherwise remain undiscovered. This foundational capability allows us to transform raw location-based data from satellites and other sources into clear, intuitive, and interactive intelligence products that support strategic planning and operations.
Building Resilience in a Connected World
In an era of almost total reliance on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) like GPS for positioning, navigation, and timing, the risk of signal outages from technical failures, solar events, or intentional interference, presents a critical vulnerability, and MIICT is actively engaged in developing innovative fall-back technologies for GNSS outages. Our research and development in this area focus on creating robust, alternative positioning solutions that ensure continuity for critical infrastructure and applications, safeguarding operations against GNSS disruption.
Unlocking Insights with AI-Powered Image Analysis
Modern satellites provide an unprecedented wealth of high-resolution imagery. Manually analysing this data is fast becoming an arduous, if not impossible, task. We leverage our deep expertise in Artificial Intelligence to automate and elevate this process, applying sophisticated algorithms to analyse high-resolution satellite images and get the outputs we need. Our AI models are trained to detect, identify, and classify objects and features with incredible speed and accuracy, from monitoring crop health and illegal construction to tracking vessel movements and assessing environmental damage after a natural disaster.
Fusing Data for a Deeper Perspective
As no single sensor can tell the whole story, we strongly believe that the true power of Earth Observation lies in combining data from multiple sources. We specialise in fusing data from different image sets to create a richer, more complete picture. By integrating information from various parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, such as Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR), Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), and traditional visible (RGB) imagery, we can overcome the limitations of any single sensor, with this multi-modal approach allowing us to see through clouds with SAR, assess soil moisture with SWIR, and identify materials on the ground, providing novel insights into long-standing challenges.
